MathCounts State Competition

LMS student receives 6th place at MathCounts State Competition
Posted on 04/23/2021

Lake Middle School 7th  grade student Ethan Lu, participated in the MathCounts program, a national middle school mathematics competition that focuses on mathematical problem solving through four rounds of in-person “bee” style contests.  This year, however, due to COVID-19 there were only two rounds:

  • Spring Round:  focuses on speed and accuracy.  Students have 40 minutes to complete 30 math problems without a calculator.
  • Target Round:  focuses on problem-solving and mathematical reasoning.  Students receive 4 pairs of problems and have 6 minutes to complete each pair, assuming the use of a calculator.

After practicing for the MathCounts competition since September (virtually due to COVID-19) Ethan earned 6th place at the State competition held on March 25th, 2021.  On April 16tha representative from the MathCounts program came to Lake Middle School and awarded Ethan a trophy for his accomplishment.

Ethan would like to thank his coach, Qin Lin for his continual support and encouragement over the last 2 years!

All students in grades 6-8 may participate in the MathCounts program.
