Book Checkout Procedures

Distance Learning Curbside Book Checkout

  • Students will be allowed to request three books at a time.
  • Books requested in Virtual Library can be picked up as soon as students receive an email indicating they have been checked out for you.
  • Books will be placed in student bins in the lobby for pick up. (Between 7:30am-3:00pm, families can pick up items here at Lake). 
  • Books can then be returned at any time during a normal school day and dropped off in the large black bin located in the front entryway.

Overdue, Lost, Damaged Book Procedures

Overdue Books

  • Books are considered overdue after two weeks. Due dates are flexible during distance learning, but we hope to get books returned within a month of their original checkout whenever possible.
  • When a book has been determined to be overdue, Mr. Atkins, will make contact (email, phone, letter) with the parents or guardian requesting the return of the resource or the replacement cost.
  • If a student has an overdue book, they may not continue to check out books until the book is returned, paid form, or replaced, or the media specialists has made contact with the parents/families and a plan is in place.

Damaged Books

  • If a book is returned damaged (water, torn or missing pages, written on), the student will be responsible for paying for or replacing the book. The book should be replaced with a new copy of the title that was damaged. 
  • Water damage is the most common type of damage. Please do not put water bottles in your backpack!
  • If a student has a damaged book, they may not continue to check out books until the book us paid for or replaced, or the media specialist has made contact with the parents/families and a plan is in place. 

Lost Books

  • If a student loses a library book, they will not be able to check out other books until that book is paid for or returned. 
  • A book can be paid for with cash or a check made out to Lake Middle School (the option of replacing the book with a new copy is also available).
  • If a student has a lost book, they may not continue to check out books until the book is returned, paid for, or replaced, or the media specialist has made contact with the parents/families and a plan is in place.
Based on student or family needs, all policies and procedures can be modified at the discretion of the school media specialist or principal.
